Anyone who has participated in the FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) will attest to the inspiring and transformative nature of the games. It is the playground for budding engineers to garner real-world engineering, programming and design experience. Every new season represents a new opportunity for each succeeding team to evolve in capability and ingenuity.
The FRC Design Handbook Series began as a repository of useful knowledge that can be passed down to future members of Team 4817. As the first compilation of Macro Design training material took shape, it became evident that this information would be useful to many more aspiring engineers around the world who share the desire to take their FRC team to the next level.
The very first volume of the FRC Design Handbook — Macro Design: Getting Ready for the Game Drop — is now available to help you up your game.
This website serves as the accompanying resource for the handbook. Bookmark it for easy access throughout your season. Conversely, to make the most of the materials assembled here, be sure to get your copy of the book.
Macro Design: Getting Ready for the Game Drop (Volume 1)
FRC Teams start a new season each year with the Game Drop on the first weekend of January. If you are planning to iterate the team to a new level of readiness for the game season, a good place to start is by upgrading the engineering knowledge base and skills of team members. This handbook was written with this purpose in mind. Take a guided exploration of robot mechanisms and the macro design process to be ready for the Game Drop.
Coaches & Mentors: use this as a resource to train new members
Aspiring Engineers: read this to quickly brush up on mechanism knowledge
Team Members: embark on a 6 to 11 week curriculum as a team to be ready for the Game Drop
Parents of FRC Team Members: read this to understand the robots your sons/daughters build
